I hear this so often when I talk to people. They keep putting off their happiness because they are waiting for someone or something. I hear:
“I’ll be happy when I meet someone new”
“I’ll be happy when it’s Friday”
“I’ll be happy when I’m out of debt”
“I’ll be happy when I get a new job”
“I’ll be happy when I lose weight”
And the list goes on and on!
Here’s my advice:
Seriously, be happy now!
No person and no thing can make you happy! You make YOU happy. Other people can ADD to your happiness. But if you are looking for someone else to make you happy, you are setting yourself up for a huge disappointment. You need to be your own best friend first.
And as far as all the other “things” that people think will make them happy, you should give up on that dream. Again, “things” can add to your happiness, but they can’t make you happy! I’ve experienced this myself, I’ve been around people who would put off their happiness until they got this or that. And guess what? It made them “happy” for a very short period of time and then they went back to being unhappy.
It’s like people who “have” to have a significant other to be happy. If you can’t be happy by yourself, how can you be happy with someone else? There’s a saying, “You need to be your own best friend!” And it’s so true.
I firmly believe that’s why there as so many unhappy people in this world today. So many people are looking for happiness in all the wrong places. They need to start with themselves first. Make yourself happy, and then see what happens.
People often ask me what makes me happy (and where does that pretty smile come from?)…so what makes me happy? Doing the things I want, being around the people I want, and doing the kind of work I want. And it’s taken me a long time to figure all that out, only I’ve got it now! I don’t look for anyone to make me happy, I’ve got that. And I don’t look for any “things” to make me happy, I’ve got that too!
And I know, I know…someone will say,’ well Patti, if I were to give you a million dollars, would that make you happy?” And of course my answer would be yes! But I don’t have a million dollars (yet), and I’m happy.
Stop putting off your happiness today.
Till next time my friends,
