A couple of years ago I wrote a blog called “Nine Tips to Have a Happy Day”. To this day, that has been my most popular blog. Why you might ask? Because happiness is a world-wide-want (actually, probably toe-to-toe with love). I mean, who doesn’t want to be happy? And unfortunately, there’s a lot of unhappiness going on in the world today. But, as I have always said, you can’t move mountains if you’re feeling down-and-out.
So here are some my suggestions to have a happy day:
Help someone else! Even when you are feeling down, one of the best things you can do is help someone else. Maybe it’s a neighbor, a friend, a relative. Maybe someone at work. There is always someone who could use your help. Maybe it’s a phone call to someone who would love to hear from you? Make someone smile, better yet, make them laugh. They will treasure you forever and they will never forget! And the sheer act of helping another will change your whole disposition, and hopefully, lift your spirit and make you happy!
Smile! The simple act of smiling will make you feel better, even if you have to fake it. Double bonus points if you make someone else smile (it’s like kindness, through that shit around like confetti!)
Coco Chanel knew best! If you’re sad, add more lipstick and attack. Find a shade of lipstick that makes your face light up, and wear it like the beautiful beast that you are. And if you’re not a lipstick kind of girl (or guy), find a good chapstick 😉 I find so many people are afraid to shine,as if they need permission. So if that’s the case with you, you have my permission to shine…and I say, shine like a motherfxcker, and don’t care what anyone else thinks! Trust me, you most definitely will feel better about yourself!
Stop comparing yourself to other people! You are uniquely you, own it! As the saying goes, “comparison is the thief of joy!” So stop doing it. Don’t worry about who’s grass is greener, worry about your own grass and grow a God damn field of lilies.

My good friend told me that whenever she’s not having a great day, or she’s feeling a little down, she goes out and pulls weeds from her garden. And she said, she always feels better. So whether you are pulling weeds or planting flowers, mother nature has a wonderful way of connecting us back to her, and her soothing qualities. So…#plantdreamspullweedsandgrowahappylife
Get up, dress up, show up and NEVER give up! I cannot emphasize this one enough, before you walk out your front door in the morning, take a quick look in the mirror and ask yourself, “is this the image I’ve chosen to show the world who I am today”? Looking and feeling your best are the keys to self-confidence, and when you have self-confidence, you can do anything! Like pursue all those dreams you have!
Stop looking for happiness outside of yourself! YOU are the only one who can make YOU happy. Other people can add to your happiness, but you are in charge of your happiness. And here is BIG reminder, stop giving the keys to YOUR happiness to someone else. Your happiness, your responsibility!
It’s amazing to me how many people tell me how crappy they feel, and when I ask them how much exercise they get, they answer is usually “none”. And that’s a terrible thing. Listen, I’ve lived that lifestyle, back when I was in the corporate world. You work all day, come home, eat dinner, sit down and watch TV for hours on end. That lifestyle makes you fat, bored, disinterested, and gives you a foggy brain, and your sex life is most likely not great either. You have to get out and get moving. Join a gym, take a walk, take a Zumba class, park at the other end of the parking lot, take the stairs…you get the idea. And while you are at it, drink water, lots of it! Nothing will age you faster, and make you feel “old” than not taking care of your body! #starttoday
Have you heard the phrase, “you are the sum of the five people you associate with”! So if you are hanging around with toxic people, guess what? Chances are either you become a toxic person, or, you live your life feeling the effects of hanging out with toxic people. Instead, hang out with people who want to see you shine! People who make you feel good! People who are out chasing their dreams, and want to see you achieve yours. Those are your people! Stay away from people who suck the happy right out of you. You know who I’m talking about…those people. Run, don’t walk, and stay far away.
Have fun! We’re all so busy doing, doing whatever, that we forget to have fun. Remember when you were a kid, before you learned how to worry ;-)…all you had to think of was what fun thing were you going to do that day. Well, start adding fun to your schedule. Seriously. At least three times a week, add something to your schedule that is actually FUN. Something that makes you excited, like a kid. Something that makes your soul happy!

Bonus hack! And one of my personal favorites. If they aren’t nice to you, then, they go away! And I don’t care “who” they are. You deserve better!
